The Barstool Fund is a non-profit 30-day monetary fund to help small businesses such as bars, restaurants and dry cleaners, survive shutdown orders caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was launched in December of 2020 by Dave Portnoy, internet celebrity and founder of the sports and pop culture blog Barstool Sports. Portnoy contributed $500,000 of his own money to get the fund started. He has since raised more than $41 million to help over 420 local businesses survive Government-enforced restrictions. Funding focuses on organizations that have or can create a strong base of support. Because they're a privately held company, they have the freedom to fund risk-taking, off-the-beaten-track groups, and that’s where they believe their small grants are most effective. They accept one proposal per group in a given fiscal year (May 1–April 30), with deadlines varying from program to program. The typical grant size also varies from program to program, but generally ranges between $5,000 and $20,000. The purpose of the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program (SCBGP) is to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops. Specialty crops are defined as “fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture, and nursery crops (including floriculture).” The agency, commission, or department responsible for agriculture within any of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is eligible to apply directly to the U.S. Department of Agriculture for grant funds.
